Keeping a notebook while you sleep.
I, like many other writers keep a notebook next to my bed (or in my case ON my bed) while we sleep. Most of the most compelling changes that occur to my story happen from ideas I gain in the minutes that precede sleep. I think that the time before one sleeps is the most productive thought process of the entire day. It is the only time that one can lye still, doing nothing, and be productive. It's what we are meant to do! It gives us a chance to clear everything from our heads and think of only one subject of a time.
The closer and closer we get to dozing off, the more abstract our thoughts can get, leading to more interesting ideas. One can only delve into their mind so deep before what they can't carry back what they find, but in a sleep state the limits are lifted. So keep a notebook!
